COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Project Name: SENIOR CENTER AND ASSISTED LIVING Location: Southport, NC Project Type: Participatory Programming for a Site Master Plan Total Square Footage: 30 acres Special Design and Construction: The master plan incorporated sustainable design principles such as solar access and natural daylighting. Summary: Local citizens in Southport, NC joined together to explore the development of a senior community on a 30-acre tract of land. A series of workshops aided the participants in defining what they wanted in their community and identifying the most efficient use of land. Their enthusiasm and coordinated efforts resulted in the Senior Community Master Plan pictured below. Phase One includes affordable, independent-living apartments for senior citizens and is currently under construction. Phase Two, which includes a senior center; assisted-living apartments; single-family homes; and additional independent-living apartments, will be constructed at a later date. The final document served as a fundraising tool for the local church that is spearheading the Senior Community Development. ![]() Master Plan Click for larger view ![]() ![]() Workshop Participants Project Name: SAINT MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH Location: Wilmington, NC Project Type: Community Visioning Total Square Footage: n/a Goal of Project: To develop master plan goals and objectives for St. Mary's Parish, School, and Community Programs. ![]() ![]() Project Name: TALLANT RESIDENCE Location: Pittsboro, NC Project Type: Site Master Plan Total Square Footage: 58 acres Special Design and Construction: The master plan includes the layout of the main house, a guesthouse, gardens, orchards, a greenhouse, outbuildings, pathways and a driveway. Passive solar and natural ventilation strategies will be utilized in the main house, guesthouse and greenhouse. Summary: Design Collaboration conducted several participatory workshops with the Tallants.
